Firingi Kalibari is a temple dedicated to the Hindu Goddess Kali located on B.B Ganguly street in the Bowbazar locality of Kolkata , India . The temple is said to be over 500 years old, and is named after its association with Anthony Firingi a European who converted to Hinduism and was a great devotee of Kali.

Thanthania Kalibari (ঠনঠনিয়া কালীবাড়ি) is a Kali temple in Kolkata . It is situated on Bidhan Sarani. The deity in the temple is known as Siddheshwari. On the occasion of Kali Puja, devotees gather at the temple for worship. The Thanthania Kalibari was founded by Shankar Ghosh in 1803, according to a mention in the temple building itself. However, according to a different tradition it was built in 1703. The image of the presiding deity Siddheshwari is made of clay and it is replaced every year by a new one. Tuesdays and Saturdays are considered auspicious for a visit to the temple.

Manna Dey is no more. He died early this morning in Bengaluru at the age of 94. And he was suffering from various illness. All the well-wishers and admirers prayed for his recovery, but the inevitable death claimed him. Manna Dey, the legendary singer reigned the Indian scene of music industry for many many decades. I remember, when I was 10, I had to listen 'Anurodher Asar' of Kolkata AIR. 'rimjhim jhim bristi' was the newly released song of Manna Dey that year. I used to listen it again and again and noticed the tone and accent of the singer. It was somewhat peculiar to me. And I asked my elder brothers, is this singer non-Bengalee? I asked it because the singer adopted a very lively approach to give the song ease. And it was very novel at that time. I fell in love with the গায়কী of this singer since then. Eve...

The Sadharan Brahmo Samaj was started with three distinguished men on 15th May 1878. These three were Ananda Mohan Bose, Shibchandra Deb and Umesh Chandra Datta. These three were initiated into the Brahmo Samaj of India by Keshub Chandra Sen . Shibchandra Deb became the first secretary of the Samaj and Ananda Mohan Bose the first president with Gurucharan Mahalanobish as the Treasurer. The foundation stone of the new mandir was laid on 23rd January 1879 by Shibchandra Deb. It was 49 years since Rammohun Roy had consecrated his first theistic church on the same day in 1830. The principal members of the progressive faction that formed this Samaj were as follows. Tomorrow is Kojagari Lakshmi Puja, so, Kumortuli is busy to complete the idols in time. Kojagari Lakshmi puja is a phenomenon across Bengal - almost all the Bengalee families perform this puja at theirs houses. In the 2nd pic, the prospective buyer of clay idols are choosing one of them. Kojagari Lakshmi puja means feast of ripe bananas. So, plenty of bananas are coming to markets to meet the requirements. The Ghosh family came to Pathuriaghata at the time of Warren Hastings. It is said that Warren Hastings and his wife visited the Ghosh family. Khelat Chandra Ghosh (1829-1878), grandson of Hasting's banyan (clerk) Ramlochan Ghosh, shifted out of the old family house at 46 Pathuriaghata Street to a new house at 47 Pathuriaghata Street. The family made substantial contribution in music and charity. There is a lane named after him in Ward No. 24.The lineage at 47 Pathuriaghata Street was Babu Khelat Ghosh, Babu Romanath Ghosh, Babu Siddheswar Ghosh ( who patronized the famous Author Bibhuti Bhushan Bandopadhyay) and his brother Babu Aukhoy Ghosh. Presently the All Bengal Music Conference is held at 47 Pathuriaghata Street and is patronized by Babu Pradeep Ghosh This mansion is filled with marble sculptures,paintings,crystal chandeliers and other art objects. Raja Nabakrishna Deb adopted a son named Gopimohan. But when his own son Rajkrishna was born, Raja built a house for his adopted son, which has now holding No. 36, Raja Nabakrishna Deb Street and now known as 'Baro (elder or older) Rajbari. Raja Nabakrishna was the Dewan of Lord Clive, and he also used to perform Durga puja in this house too. The beautiful sculpture and decoration of this house is worth to watch still now. -- A. B.
