Today is 21 February, International Mother Language Day. A language memorial would be inaugurated at Deshpriyo Park in Kolkata this afternoon by Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal. On this memorial, a unique method applied to pay homage to the pioneers of Bangla language - from the ancient poets of Charyapada to Bipradas, Ishwar Gupta, Dinabandhu Mitra, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Atul Prasad Sen, Rajanikanta Sen, Bimal Kar, Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, Bimal Mitra, Ashapurna Debi, Satyajit Roy, Annada Shankar Roy etc. A revolving stage is there beside the memorial where the function would be held. The language memorial in Kolkata is the first of its kind. -- A. B.
