Inauguration Of Dakshineswar Temple

In the year 1855, on this day, Dakshineswar temple of goddess Bhabatarini was inaugurated by Rani Rasmoni and her son-in-law Mathura babu. The temple was established by Rani Rasmoni on a land measuring 16 bigha. -- A. B.

16/16A, Bose Para Lane - House Of Sister Nivedita

The State Government of West Bengal decided to declare the house of Sister Nivedita in Kolkata heritage building where she stayed to work for the needy and women of the city. For this purpose, Kolkata Municipal Corporation will purchase the building from its present owner and make it heritage building with an archive where documents about her work and life will be produced for the visitors. Century-old Ruined Temple Of Bengal

Yesterday, Kolkata Knight Riders lost the match at Eden Gardens; Mumbai Indians won the match practically for the required 21 runs, came from the last over of Balaji's ball. And by this way, MI snatched the match from the hand of KKR. So, it may be called, Balaji's last over : nightmare for Knights. Kolkata Knight Riders will now face difficulties to reach final. Exhibition Of Musical Instruments At Indian Museum In Kolkata

Once upon a time, musical instruments used to export in Japan through China and Korea. Again, a few instruments came from Iran and Afghanistan. As a result, Indian heritage of musical instruments enriched. Many music lovers of Bengal stepped forward to preserve musical instruments. Raja of Pathuriaghata - Sir Sourindra Mohan Thakur was one of them. In the year 1875, Sourindra Mohan, Jatindra Mohan and Rani Swarnamoyee gifted several musical instruments to Kolkata Museum. Amongst them, a few instruments of 'Bengali Band' played at the reception of 7th Edward, came to Kolkata as Prince Of Wales. We came to know from the book 'Universal History Of Music' (1896) by Sourindra Mohan that in the year 1878, at the time of his Japan tour, the then Emperor Mikado gifted him various musical instruments like flute, organ, harp, veena and drums of different sizes. The big drum was painted by traditional Japanese paintings and in the name of famous ancient warrior '...

Parks And Birds

Artificial lights of various parks of Kolkata overwhelming birds. Electric lights of about 50ft high posts snatching sleeps of birds. Hence, they are deciding to go elsewhere. The Mayor of Kolkata directed his officials to reorient the lights of parks. The birds who use to sleep in complete dark, feeling disturbed by the high power lights falling on trees and flying blindly to re-search their nests. So, Kolkata Municipal Corporation decided to install dimmer and 'timer' at the parks so that, high power lights will be off after 9pm and height of the posts will also be reduced. -- A. B.

In the year 1861, on this day (according to Bangla calendar) the great poet Rabindranath Tagore was born in Kolkata. He was reluctant to get formal education of school. But he educated himself with the help of private tutors. At the young age he went to England for further education. Born In May : Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray - the great film-maker of international fame was born in Kolkata on 2 May. At the early age, he used to illustrate book covers, advertisements etc but cherished the dream to make a film. He chose a Bengali novel named 'Pather Panchali' by Bibhuti Bhushan Bandyopadhyay and made the film of the same name by the grant-in-aid of West Bengal Government. It took several years to complete the film due to paucity of funds. However, the first film of Ray made history in the sphere of neo cinema.-- A. B.

Born In May : Manna Dey

Manna Dey - the living legend singer of Kolkata born on 1 May in the year 1920. His nick name was 'Mana' and good name Prabodh Chandra Dey. He had the direct lesson in music by his uncle - the great singer K C Dey. Manna Dey graduated from Scottish Church College and then went to Mumbai with his uncle who was a famous musician already there. Later, Manna Dey worked with S D Burman also. His first playback was a duet with Suraya in the film 'Tamanna' in the year 1943 and became an established playback singer from the film 'Amar Bhopali'. Manna Dey received numerous awards including Padmashri, Padmabhushan and Dada Saheb Phalke awards alongwith mementoes. -- A. B.

David Hare And Hindu College

In the year 1826 on this day, the construction of the building of Hindu College was completed at the land of David Hare, north of Gol Dighi, at the cost of Rs. 1,20,000 and the said college was transferred here from the house of firingi Ramkamal Basu.
