Satyajit Ray And His Calcutta Trilogy

Satyajit Ray was born on 2 May, 1921 in Kolkata. His Calcutta Trilogy
: Pratidwandi (The Adversary), Seemabaddha (Company Limited) and Jana
Aranya (The Middleman) was based
on Kolkata and he depicted the contemporary social, political,
economic and individual status of the city through different stature
of the characters. Take for example the unemployed youth of
'Pratidwandi' - disillusioned, but not corrupted. But, when he is an
employee in the film 'Seemabaddha', he had to travel on the side-track
of morality and urged to live better. And thus generated frustrated,
deprived youth like 'Jana Aranya'. So, the link is there. But, as a
film-maker, he never compromised with the cinematic value and so, the
aesthetic excellence of Calcutta Trilogy is still worth watching.

Exhibition Of Paintings : 'Earth Voices'

A rare painting exhibition on forest conservation will held in
Kolkata. Campaigns have
been done on various forums,
but rarely have they been
routed through art. Forests,
with all their natural
splendour, colours and wildlife, will come alive on canvas at a
unique painting exhibition at
the Birla Academy of Art and
Culture from May 15-20. Titled
'Earth Voices', the exhibition
will have 45 paintings that catch various shades of nature,
jungles and even jungle lore.
They have been painted by
Indian Forest Service officer V
K Yadav and his wife Alka. The idea is to spread
awareness about jungles and
wildlife and sensitize people
about the need to protect
them, says Yadav. "We have
got some brilliant artwork that brings alive the beauty of
forests. They also carry a subtle
message that won't be lost on
the audience. If this inspires
even a few to take interest in
nature and wildlife and do their bit for conservation, we
would have done our job," says
Yadav. Deforestation, global
warming, rising water-levels
and the resultant threat to
coastal areas, floods and even
crop failure have been dealt
with in the paintings. "Through the paintings, we
strive to deliver a strong and
urgent message - that time is
running out for Mother Earth
and that we need to act to
save our precious planet," says Yadav.

Century-old Temple Of Chandannagar

The town Chandannagar of Hooghly district has many historical
monuments of heritage. But those are under dilapidation due to lack
of proper care and conservation.
Nandadulal Jeu's temple is one of them. It was established by
Indranarayan Chowdhury - the Izaradar of the then French Government
under the regime of French Governor Duplé of Chandannagar in the year
1740. The roof is of 'do-chala' like a bow and there are only 2
temples of this style in West Bengal - one, this of Chandannagar and
the other, 'Jor Banglo' temple of Bishnupur. Unfortunately, there are
no idols in this Nandadulal temple. In the year 1756, English Admiral
Watson through rivers and Robert Clive by road, attacked the French in a joint
venture. The war is famous in history as War of Chandannagar. A 'gola'
was fell on the temple and the sign is still there. Clive approached
towards the basement (Paatal Ghar) of the temple in search of
treasure. And he had to approach laid aside the idol. The idol was
made of 'Kashtipathar' and one part of it was threw away on the nearby
pond and it says, the other part was threw away on river Ganga in
Kashi (Benaras). Later, the part of the idol was recovered from the
pond and preserved at the archive of Institute of the Chandannagar. By
dint of booty looted by Clive from Chandannagar, they fought
next year the war of Plassey.

The people of Chandannagar want the Government may take the steps to
conserve the heritage and historical monuments. --

Sparrows Back In Kolkata

Recalling the childhood days when used to awake by the chirping
of sparrows on the doorsteps of verandah. They used
to make nests into the hollow parts of beams of ceiling. But,
surprisingly the sparrows gradually vanished from the growing cities.
Now, they're coming back, merrily dancing around bedroom windows and
creating a ruckus as the first rays of the sun hit
the terrace.
It was
a common complaint that destruction of habitat, I mean the ventilators
and cell phone signals had driven out these little friends. Then how
they come back? One interesting cause could be the ability of these
birds to adapt to the changing skyline of the city. Sparrows are now
seen nesting on the pillars of flyovers, iron structures of hoardings
and kitchens.

It is true that sparrows and other smaller birds had became scarce in
the city. But they didn't die
out altogether. They shifted their locations. But, we're happy to see
them again. People's Green Society, an NGO prepared a list of 56 birds
which are found in the city after a six-month-long survey. The list
contains orioles, barbets and woodpeckers, which were visibly declined
in the past.

Small birds, like sparrows, feed on insects. But insects and worms are
less seen today due to excessive use of pesticides. But, with the
growing greens in recent past, insects are also coming back. So the
birds too.

But some birds may have been lost forever. Once the city was home to
more than 300 species of birds. But the figure declined quickly due to
rapid urbanisation.--

KKR Lost Consecutive 2 Matches

Rajasthan Royals defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 22 runs this
evening in IPL 5. And they defeated KKR in all the fields - bowling,
fielding, batting. Goti won the toss today and elected to field. And
the cricket lovers also expected good cricket from KKR but, they
failed to restrain RR and the highest score
164 managed Rahul's team.

Goti's team chased
the target, but it proved difficult when the openers of KKR failed to
bat. They scored only 2, 5, or 15 and captain himself utterly failed.
What will be the fittest excuse of this disaster of batting?

The bowlers of KKR also failed to perform well, while the bowlers of
RR showed much better performances.

Within this darkness, the only silver line of KKR was Manoj Tiwary -
his 59 with partner Lee's 25 runs.

So many matches yet to play, but if this is the performances of KKR,
what more can we expect?--

veteran singers
from Kolkata like Sandhya Mukhopadhyay, Dwijen Mukhopadhyay and Subir
Sen would be invited at Gaan Mela and these
four artists will be conferred 'Maha Samman' (the great honour) for
their life-time achievement. The Gaan Mela or the fair of songs will

Charak Festival

The 'Charak' festival in early Kolkata was
observed mainly in the month
of March-April and saw an
amazing and quite natural
subversion of social conventions. Low
caste devotees of Lord Shiva
performed this penance, when
people swung from ropes with
an iron hook embedded into their backs.
1865, the practice of
'charak' (binding a person to a
hook and suspending him from
a high pole) was banned on grounds that it was a cruel
A week before the charak puja,
men of the lower orders wore
anklets around their necks, and
the sacred thread, went dancing
around grog shops, brothels, and courtyards of people's
houses to the beating of
drums. They went from house
to house gathering sannyasis,
ie, servants who would then
undertake the ritual penances associated with this festival. In the
evening, the children
thronged to see the Jhula
Sanyas when sadhus were
swung over bales of hay set on
fire. As the sky darkened, the
city looked altogether different, and then it was time
for the truth to emerge
surreptitiously, and the picture was not so clean to describe here.
However, enthusiasm getting lesser by the time and the festival at the
end of Bengali year being observed nowadays in Kolkata and Bengal like
a small fair, for a few interested in it.--

Horse-drawn Carriages Now Nostalgia

On November 1, 1880, Bengal's viceroy, Lord Ripon, inaugurated the
horse-drawn tram service between Sealdah and Armenian Ghat. The
horse-drawn carriages made their entry into the public transport
system once the trams gained popularity. But the horse-drawn carriages
lived in
glory for only about a century. In 1899, a UK-based
company introduced two motorcars, both painted red, as the first
motor-driven taxis in the city. As they gained popularity, French
Motors started a taxi company in the city. Then, the Landmasters,
Fords and Buicks ruled the streets. After independence, Ambassadors
replaced all other vehicles.

But, I'm talking about the past and present of horse-drawn carriages
in Kolkata. In ancient Calcutta, horse-drawn carriages were the one
and only vehicle used by the baboos and common people. And even in the
decade of 80, more than 3,000 carriages (tangas) were running in
Kolkata. In the mid-60s, the government restricted its movement.
Tangas started plying like shuttle taxis on specific routes in North
Kolkata. The popular routes were between Howrah and Sealdah (via APC
Road). In the late 80s, the government ordered to stop about 3,000
carriages in city from operating as passenger vehicles. They allowed
to use public roads for special purposes like weddings only. And in
recent past, a few carriages were allowed to ply around Victoria
Memorial only.

But, finally they moved to Hastings to comply the High Court order.
The main objection was, horses and other motor vehicles used to
pollute the surroundings of Victoria Memorial and Maidan area. So, as
a result, the horses ousted and have to stay far from the Maidan
crowd. Hence, the tangawalas are losing passengers. But the scene was
different before April. The tourists often used to hire those tangas
for a joy ride around Maidan in exchange of nominal fare. It was
really a pleasure trip. And much towards the likeness of heritage of
the city.
The history of horse-drawn carriages in the city traced to the British
era when the roads were developed by renovating them from brick-dust
to cement and finally covered by coal tar, for the smooth run of these
carriages. In the year 1780-82, during the reign of Warren Hastings,
horse-drawn carriages made their first appearance in Kolkata. So, the
history of these carriages is as old as British Raj in Kolkata. But
now, they are past - part of mere nostalgia.--

Mohun Bagan Vs Dempo Sports

Now I think, if
Odafa not
missed the penalty shot, Bagan could win the match. Odafa not abled to
play consistently in the second half and Dempo has taken the scope of
slow pace in the second half and Ranti scored the second goal by
defeating Shilton Paul. Moreover, Dempo tried to attack the defence of
Bagan in the last minutes, but not succeeded.

In spite of these, Odafa Okolie still the hero of today.

In this picture, Odafa scoring the goal today. --
